Parents- Helping your child – Phonics

Read Write Inc

At Midhurst Primary School we use the ‘Read, Write Inc.’ program to support our teaching of phonics and reading.

This is a link to explain why we use phonics to teach children to read.

This is how you can help your child at home..

It is important that each letter is pronounced correctly- follow this link to learn how to see Sylvie show you how.

Linking letters to sounds…

I spy with my little eye something beginning with m, m for Mcdonalds.  I spy with my little eye something beginning with ‘t’, t for tree.

Sounds can be special friends…

Such as sh in shop, ch in chip, or air in chair, ee in feet, ea in meat the two letters are special that make one sound otherwise known as digraphs (2 letters one sound) and trigraphs (3 letters one sound). The following chart shows all the various complex sounds.

Putting the sounds together (blending)

Once a child knows the sounds, they need to put them together (blending). You can play games and sound out some words, see below…

What is a tidy r-oo-m?

Where is your c-oa-t?

Time for b-e-d.

You child will start reading simple words like ‘mat’ they say the individual sounds ‘m-a-t’ to read mat.

Tricky words

Some words can not be read by blending as in previous section. For example ‘said’ ,‘my’, ‘me’,‘you’ ‘your’ and many others. These will be taught as part of the Read Write Inc program and are called red or tricky words.

Reading books

Once a child is ready to begin sounding out they will be sent home a decode-able phonics book. It is beneficial that the child reads this more than once to develop fluency.

This link gives you some ideas on how you can get your child to enjoy their reading books.
