In Design and Technology, the requirements of the National Curriculum are implemented as part of the topicbased approach of the school. The children are given focused tasks to develop skills in construction, textiles, food technology, and mechanics/electrics. They then carry out design and make assignments to apply the skills learnt.

At Midhurst Primary School, pupils develop and utilise their practical, creative skills. Through evaluating past and present design and technology, pupils develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. The pupils are given a range of focused, skills-based tasks (e.g. measuring and sawing wood, combining and joining materials, sewing etc.). Pupils then use their design and making skills to create their own products. Pupils evaluate their ideas and products and consider how their work could be improved. Through the topics they study, pupils are given opportunities to work with construction materials, textiles, mechanisms, electrical components and food.

In addition to the food technology taught in class, each child gets the opportunity to work with a specialist food technician in our kitchen. Our aim is to instil a love of cooking, where pupils are taught how to cook and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eatingTeachers and pupils have an input into which foods are prepared and enjoyed, largely linked to the topics being studied.
