In Foundation and Key Stage 1 children are taught phonics daily through a systematic and structured programme.

“Being able to read is the most important skill children will learn during their early schooling and has far reaching implication for lifelong confidence and well-being” (‘Letters and Sounds’ Principles and practice of high quality phonics)

At Midhurst Primary C of E school we follow the ‘Read Write Inc.’ programme.

This structured programme teaches phonics which consists of the 150+ graphemes that represent 44 speech sounds.  In these small groups the children are taught sounds with corresponding pictures, letter formation, letter name and groups of letters. To support their proficiency in reading the programme focuses on accurate word reading to develop fluency and comprehension.
